Training Opportunity for Military Veterans

Updated: Feb 19, 2021

Upkeep Training has partnered with the Ministry of Defence (M.O.D.) to help qualifying current and ex service personnel in their transition to life outside the armed forces. Through the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme, up to 80% funding is available for the CIH Level 3 in Housing Maintenance and Asset Management.

A military career is rewarding, but also one that for most personnel will end well before pensions become payable. The skills learnt are extremely useful in other careers, but lack of experience or qualifications can be a barrier to gaining positions.

The CIH (Chartered Institute of Housing) Level 3 in Housing Maintenance and Asset Management course is a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to A Level standard. It helps build an understanding of the housing maintenance/asset management role and how this fits into the wider context of housing, as well as introducing some of the knowledge necessary to participate in housing maintenance/asset management related activities.

The four units of the course are:

  • Repairs and maintenance in housing organisations

  • Managing empty properties

  • Health and safety awareness

  • Professional practice skills for housing.

When this knowledge is combined with skills developed in the armed forces that are equally applicable to housing, the CIH Level 3 in Housing Maintenance and Asset Management is a perfect qualification for those interested in a career in this field.

Due to ongoing uncertainties over COVID 19, Upkeep Training is delivering this CIH course online over a twelve month period, starting in November 2020. This gives you plenty of time to complete assignments between modules.

There is a choice of three dates for each module of the course you need to take. It starts with a two hour induction webinar in November 2020. The individual units each last two and a half hours and take place in December 2020, then 2021 in February/March, May and September. Group tutorial webinars of one hour take place in January, March, June and October and if required, you can arrange individual tutorial webinars of thirty minutes.

The cost of the course is £1450 and those eligible for support from the M.O.D. Enhanced Learning Scheme can claim back up to 80% of this. The first customer to take advantage of this course via the scheme with Upkeep has now secured a position with the RAF Benevolent Fund that helps support ex-members with a range of housing related support, such as advice on entitlements, advocacy, help with costs for adaptations and residential care fees.

Although the CIH Level 3 in Housing Maintenance and Asset Management course is delivered online, numbers are limited to ensure enough scope for interaction between tutors and attendees. You will still have all the benefits of training whilst incurring no costs or travel time. The course is delivered via Zoom.
