Recommended Courses For Vacants Team Officers

Updated: Oct 25, 2019

Vacants team officers are key staff within housing organisations. They are responsible for the efficient turnaround of void properties, in turn minimising rental loss after a tenant leaves.

The course that we specifically recommend for vacants team officers is Inspecting a Property. This shows how to conduct straightforward inspections of vacant properties, identify common faults, structure the process and best practice for health and safety. It covers what to check for both inside and outside, how to record information and raise orders, and when more detailed inspection by surveyors is required.

The ability to spot potential hazards in vacant properties can prevent problems further down the line once a tenant has moved in. The Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS) is a Government published risk based evaluation tool which can help vacants team officers identify problems. An Upkeep Training offer a one day course with which you can acquire a certificate in HHSRS accredited by ABBE (Awarding Body of the Built Environment). This course covers why properties fail the HHSRS, how to assess using their guidelines and includes real case studies and examples.

A useful accompaniment to the HHSRS course is Upkeep’s one day Condensation, Damp & Decay course. This can demonstrate to vacants team officers how to spot the likely causes of this problem, as well as outlining the differences between Condensation, water penetration and rising damp. An advancement on this is the Damp & Mould in Buildings course, giving a more in depth knowledge of condensation, causes and remedies.

As well as the generic courses about inspecting vacant properties and potential health and safety hazards, we have two useful courses that can help vacants team officers develop an understanding of the trades required for building maintenance. These courses in Domestic & Electrical Heating Installations, and Plumbing, Wastes & Drains both teach a basic knowledge of how these systems work and how to spot defects.

All of the courses mentioned in this blog last one day and are priced at £270 per person. They all take place in London, but if you have eight or more staff then we can come to your premises. Please contact us on 0208 123 0804 or by sales@upkeeptraining .co.uk and we can discuss a bespoke package to meet your requirements.
